As the principal trade body representing the UK pet food industry, we gather market data on an annual basis.
UK Pet Food collects data every year from our members, representing 90% of the UK market. We analyse different pet food formats for all pet species and release volume and value figures for all types of pet food.
We also carry out qualitative research across a group of around 2,500 people answering questions about pet ownership habits, including acquisition and relinquishment, and the impact of the cost of living, to provide more in-depth market insights.
Market Data Report & Pet Population - Update 2025
UK Pet Food has worked with Kantar for over 15 years to provide trusted, nationally representative pet population figures. This year, we took an extra cautious step and decided not to publish the 2025 data, after the reported dog population appeared higher than expected compared to other sources we cross-checked. While we are fully confident in the robustness of the methodology, we recognise that surveys can very occasionally produce an anomalous result. The most recent validated figures remain those from 2024. We will repeat the survey in early 2026 and look forward to sharing updated insights then.
