Safety & standards
UK Pet Food is committed to providing pets with quality, nutritious and safe food. Pet food is subject to over 50 pieces of legislation – in addition to this, all UK Pet Food members sign our Member Charter on an annual basis. The Charter details the legal requirements, Codes of Practice and guidelines which ensure safety & quality standards.
We work hard, alongside FEDIAF, to ensure these are maintained.
Raw pet food is a particular area of focus
UK Pet Food has published sector guidelines for the manufacture of commercial raw pet food. These guidelines promote best practice in the sector and have been developed in conjunction with Defra, the Animal Health & Protection Agency (APHA), the Health & Protection Agency (HPA) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

As well as best practice guidelines, in 2022 we launched the world-leading standard for the production of raw pet food with our UK Pet Food Raw Pet Food Certification scheme.
Developed by independent certification scheme experts, KIWA, the standard covers plant design and maintenance, supplier assurance, safe product formulation, full traceability systems, safe handling, quality checks, microbiological testing, a programme of internal auditing, HACCP, staff training and labelling compliance.
Initiated by UK Pet Food’s 17 commercial raw pet food members, the scheme raises the bar within the industry to support the safe production of commercial raw pet food.
