Sustainable pet food

Driving change towards a more sustainable future in pet food

Many factors play a major role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pet food industry. These include sustainable raw materials, environmentally friendly production and recyclable packaging materials and we are very mindful of the role our industry plays in the responsible use of resources in pet food production, including minimising, wherever possible, its environmental impact.

Our aim is for policy makers and the farming community to recognise the critical role that our members play in supporting the agricultural sector, so that pet food is included in any national action plans and policy making, particularly around the shift to more sustainable food systems and net zero.

We have a dedicated Sustainability Committee working in partnership with a number of organisations in the area, including the Food and Drink Federation and the Pet Sustainability Coalition, as well as supporting the WRAP UK Plastics Pact. All UK Pet Food members are welcome to join the committee, enabling us to work together to make a difference.

The Sustainability Committee prioritises key areas for focus:

As the pet food industry, we believe we have a responsibility to maintain a balance between the positive societal benefits of pet ownership and protecting the environment for future generations. Our National Pet Food Strategy sets out our objectives.
