Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has emerged as a critical framework for improving sustainability and accountability in product lifecycles. For pet food manufacturers, EPR means taking greater responsibility not only for the production and distribution of products, but also for the post-consumer stage, including packaging waste management.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation places accountability on product and packaging manufacturers, importers, and brand owners responsible for reducing the environmental impact of their products and packaging throughout their entire lifecycle. This legislation also ensures that these businesses financially contribute to activities such as material recycling, recovery, and disposal, as well as raising awareness among consumers.

If your business places packaged goods on the UK market, you may be obligated under EPR regulations.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Environment Agency (Defra) has published updated guidance on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging.

Plastic Packaging Tax

The Plastic Packaging Tax is designed to incentivise UK businesses to use a greater proportion of recycled materials in the production of plastic packaging, to increase demand for this material.

The regulation is designed to drive higher rates of plastic waste collection and recycling, ultimately helping to divert waste from landfill and incineration. While only a few European countries have introduced similar taxes so far, adoption is expected to grow across the region.

Our commitment to sustainable packaging

Pet food manufacturers are fully committed to reducing the environmental impact of the packaging we use. We have long advocated for reforms that enhance transparency and ensure that funds are directed towards improving the recycling infrastructure in the UK.

We are eager to work collaboratively with the UK and devolved governments to help build an efficient, effective, and world-class recycling system. By working together, we can drive meaningful change and create a more sustainable future.

UK Pet Food is here to support members in meeting the requirements of EPR and other packaging policies. We provide regular updates in our monthly member newsletter, and discussions take place in our Sustainability Committee.
