UK Pet Food Response to Research from the Universities of Edinburgh and Exeter on the Environmental Impact of Pet Food
Pets are family and they play an incredibly important role in our lives, offering companionship, improving wellbeing and supporting millions of households across the UK. As the industry responsible for feeding these pets, we have a clear responsibility to people, animals, and the planet.
The research from the universities of Edinburgh and Exeter contributes to an important and ongoing conversation about the environmental impact of pet food, alongside significant progress already made across the sector.
Responsible and sustainable sourcing has long been central to how pet food is made. The vast majority of ingredients used in pet food are by-products from the human food chain, enabling the efficient use of nutritious materials while minimising food waste, maximising the use of valuable resources, and supporting a more circular food system.
With growing pressure on the planet’s resources, UK Pet Food and our members are focused on continuing to develop smart, sustainable ways to produce nutritious and affordable pet food, including exploring alternative proteins. Pet owners in the UK can now choose options such as insect-based diets and treats made from cell-cultivated proteins.
Sustainability goes beyond ingredients alone. Packaging, manufacturing processes, energy use and animal welfare all play a part. UK Pet Food recently launched its Sustainability Ambition 2030, an industry roadmap for collective action to reduce environmental impact. You can read more about our commitments across five environmental pillars here.
As the researchers highlight, support for pet owners in making mindful choices is key, and there are sustainable options to suit different budgets.
