Our Ambition?

Optimise the use of co-products, innovative solutions, alternative ingredients and efficient manufacturing to reduce environmental impacts

A sustainable food system is one that optimises the use of circular solutions to reduce waste and impacts and make best use of available resources. By using co-products, the pet food sector plays a vital role in supporting a more circular food system.

UK Pet Food champions the use of co-products, innovative solutions and alternative ingredients to reduce environmental impacts of our food system. Our members are looking to enhance their contribution to circular food systems and face challenges in telling the story of the benefits to industry stakeholders

Why is action needed?

Globally, 25–30% of total food produced is lost or wasted. Food loss and waste is estimated to contribute up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions – almost five times the total emissions of the aviation sector. This significant waste from our food system not only results in significant carbon emissions but puts increased pressure on natural systems.

The pet food sector plays a key role in advancing a more circular food system by making efficient use of co-products, surplus, and byproducts from the human food chain. Building on this approach will support food system resilience and carbon emission reduction by minimising waste and pressure on natural resources.
