Pets help their owners to connect with and enjoy nature. From supporting wild birds in gardens, to helping pets and their owners spend time in nature, pet food manufacturers have an important role to play.
The UK is facing a nature crisis with wildlife populations declining precipitously over the last 50 years. The pet food sector relies on nature to grow food and is part of the agricultural value chain which is a significant contributor to biodiversity loss.
UK Pet Food is championing action to embed nature-positive thinking across the pet food industry. We recognise that reversing biodiversity loss is essential for long-term business resilience and we want to lead the way in building understanding and capability across the value chain.
Why is action needed?
The pet food sector depends on nature for its ingredients and has a responsibility to help protect it. Biodiversity loss is already impacting global agricultural supply chains, driving up costs and reducing the availability of key materials.
In the UK, nature is in rapid decline, with 1 in 6 species at risk of extinction. Supporting nature-positive production is key to building resilient supply chains and to protecting the places that pets and people love.
