3. Sustainable Commodities
Pet food ingredients are drawn from global supply chains. Pet food manufacturers have the opportunity to influence sourcing practices and safeguard forests and ecosystems.
UK Pet Food is working with members to ensure manufacturers understand deforestation and conversion risks in their supply chain and to establish practices that prevent loss of important ecosystems.
Preventing deforestation and conversion is complex, requiring action across the agri-food value chain. One of the biggest hurdles for members is the challenge of traceability in co-product supply chains.
Why is action needed?
Agriculture is the leading cause of biodiversity loss. Loss of forests and other important ecosystems is a major contributor to global carbon emissions.
Many common pet food ingredients - such as soy and meat - are linked to deforestation and land conversion so reducing this impact is vital for protecting climate, nature, and long-term ingredient security.
By building traceability in supply chains and working more closely with suppliers and producers of raw ingredients, manufacturers can accelerate the shift to deforestation-free supply chains.
